Let’s say you’re multiplying
2 x 1/4

You put a 1 under the 2 and that makes 2/1 because that is still 2 but just in fraction form. Any number over one is just that number.

So now we have

2/1 x 1/4

You multiply across the top and across the bottom.

So then we’d get

2/4
