Women's work in WW1. During WWI (1914-1918), large numbers of women were recruited into jobs vacated by men who had gone to fight in the war. New jobs were also created as part of the war effort, for example in munitions factories.
For many upper class women, the aftermath of the war meant freedom, because the shift in attitudes meant that they could go out without chaperones, smoke, and wear short dresses. However, for working class women, when the soldiers came back and reclaimed the jobs, they had no choice but to return to domestic service in order to earn money. hope this helps
