b. Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina
The word Hijrah comes from the Latin word Heriga which means Migration or Emigration, and it makes reference to the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Yathrib (which was later renamed "Medina" by the prophet) in 622 ce. They moved in order to escape persecution from those in Mecca who opposed Muhammad’s preaching and the spread of Islam.
