Most dictators have several characteristics in common. They usually rule autocracies, governments with a single self-appointed leader and no governing body to check his power. Often, dictators have totalitarian regimes, keeping their power through control of the mass media.
Napoleon eventually changed the political system on the farm from communism to totalitarianism and he turned himself into a dictator. Napoleon and Squealer also told the other animals that Napoleon is an ideal leader because he is their only salvation to prevent Mr. Jones from reconquering the farm.
