On numerous occasions some of the aristocrats or the king himself from Macedonia would have applied to participate int he Olympic games as they were seen as a very prestigious competition. Sometimes the Greeks would have allowed it, other times not, and the reason for that was that the Greeks considered the Macedonians to be Barbarians as they were not Greek, didn't spoke a Greek language, and were also very different in appearance. Occasionally a Macedonian would have won the Olympic games and that was to a very big displeasure of the Greeks, on one occasion the Greeks even refused to give the award to the Macedonian winner.
