Somatoform disorders are a group of psychological disorders in which a patient experiences physical symptoms such as pain but there is no underlying medical or neurological reason to explain what they are experiencing. An example of a somatoform disorder would be hypochondria where the patient believes 100% that there is something or many things seriously wrong with their health but there is no medical evidence to prove it.

Dissociative disorders are a group of psychological disorders in which a patient experiences dissociation from themselves either mentally or physically or both. This means that they involuntarily break away from or have a disconnection from their thoughts, identity, consciousness and memory. An example would be Dissociative identity disorder or what used to be known as multiple personality disorder.

The phrase psychological disorder is sometimes used to refer to mental disorders or psychiatric disorders, which are more commonly known. Mental disorders are characterized by a pattern of behavioral or psychological symptoms that affect various aspects of one's life.

Somatoform and dissociative illnesses cause distress to the individual who is experiencing them.
