African art connects the real world with the spiritual world in the following ways:
Traditional African cultural beliefs about the spirit world, are widely represented by traditional and modern art such as statues, sculptures and masks. Wooden masks, for example, were used to depict deities or ancestors where in many traditions, they are believed to channel spirits. While, Statues and sculptures, on the other hand, represent or connect the real world to spiritual forces. A good example is, Bambara statuettes, such as the Chiwara, which are used as spiritually charged objects during a ritual.
The African cultures' arts were focused on ancestors and considers them as a medium to connect life with god. Art serves the purpose of communicating with ancestors and god.
Traditionally Africans believe in the spirits which they represent through their statues, sculptures, and masks. Wooden masks were used as channel for reaching to ancestors' spirits.
Similarly, statues and sculptures were used to connect the living beings with these spirits of deities or ancestors such as Bambara statuettes which they actively use to perform all their rituals.
