The conflict between the two countries has unleashed two wars there, and in 1998 it was close to unleashing a nuclear confrontation. The dispute is centered in the region of Kashmir, which currently belongs in part to India but the Pakistanis claim it as their own, arguing that the population is mostly Muslim.
