It was organized by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The result was the publication of the Declaration of Seneca Falls, a document based on the Declaration of Independence of the United States in which they denounced the restrictions, especially political, to which women were subjected: not being able to vote, nor to present themselves to elections, not hold public office, or affiliate with political organizations, or attend political meetings. The text is considered the founding text of the feminist movement.
The main demands filed by the Seneca Falls Convention:
- Gender equality.
- Women are free to express their opinions in public.
- Fight for women's social, civil and religious rights.
Further explanation
The Seneca Falls Convention is a convention that aims to fight for women's rights. such as social rights, civil rights, and religious rights. The meeting produced a women's voting movement, which more than seven decades later ensured women's right to vote.
Five women coordinate the Seneca Falls convention, where the five women are also active in the abolitionist movement calling for an end to slavery and racial discrimination. the five women are:
- Elizabeth Cady Staton
- Lucretia Mott.
- Mary M'Clintock.
-Martha Coffin Wright
- Jane Hunt.
The Seneca Falls Convention has at least been an important scratch in the historical wave of the women's movement. After a meeting, finally, a Sentiment Declaration was produced. which requires the reform of marital law, divorce, property, and childcare.
The Sentiment Declaration is a manifesto of the Seneca Falls Convention that illustrates the complaints and demands of women who call on women to fight for their right to equality as citizens of the United States.
At least there is a criticism of these historical events. If you use the binocular landscape of the history of the women's movement, indeed the protest of women in Seneca Falls is a slice of historical narrative amid the incessant production of gender discourse throughout the world. But in the historical space, this movement called liberal feminism only represented the interests of white middle-class women, but marginalized working-class women and black women. This is the same as silencing the fact of female oppression that occurs in all social classes.
