The Loyalists and Patriots had different approaches to the question of independence from Great Britain. Interestingly, almost one third of colonists remained loyal to the British empire. These Loyalists viewed their interests as more aligned with the British than the Patriots. Patriots opposed British rule and imagined themselves as an independent nation. About fifty percent of the colonists supported this position.
