With the election of 1860, the republicans under Abraham Lincoln vowed to prevent the expansion of slavery, and they also demanded secession, that is the action to withdrawal formally from membership of a political state, among other federations or bodies. South Carolina seceded from the union in December of the same year, and in February 1861 it joined the new Confederate States of America.
