Tropism is the response of an organism towards any stimuli. stimuli may be light, gravity, temperature etc. In photosynthesis plants are responded towards light, and growth of their shoot system are towards the light source. This type of tropism is called phototropism.

The plant shoots grow in the direction of sunlight, hence they show positive phototropism, whereas plant roots grow in direction against the sunlight, they show negative phototropism.
