A. The Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution made it impossible for the government to deny the right to vote to citizens on the basis of sex. This meant that the amendment granted the right to vote to women.
B. Although women had at one point enjoyed voting rights, every state had eliminated this right by 1807. This meant that women could not participate in politics. It also meant that women were forced to obey laws that they had no part in creating. In order to correct this injustice, it was necessary to grant women voting rights.
C. One important person who was involved in the movement that led to the amendment was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was a suffragist, social activist and abolitionist. She participated in the Seneca Falls Convention and wrote The Declaration of Sentiments.
