This metaphor rises from the Letter from Birmingham Jail and just like Dr. Martin Luther King´s "Dream" speech, this letter is a further attempt from Dr. King to oppose the oppression put on African Americans not through a call to violence and further disruption of normal life of American society, but more through an attempt to recall on those feelings of patriotism and that deep desire of Americans to ensure that all enjoyed the rights and liberties that had been acquired through the independence. In this particular letter and this particular excerpt, Martin Luther King is moving the concience of all Americans in general, reminding them of what it is right and what true Americans have fought for always. He moves the concience of the American people in general so that they too become a force that helps to ensure the establishment of rights for back people as well.
