Patrick Hennry knew that war was around the corner and with one single purpose he arrived at the Virginia Convention. The purpose of Patrick Henrry's speech was to persuade his fellow delegates at the Virginia convention to take defensive posture against Great Britain and avoid sending troops to fight in the Revolutionary War.
Patrick Henry was a famous and respected lawyer. He was from Hanover County, Virginia.
During the Second Virginia Convention held in St John´s Church, Richmond, Henry delivered his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. Henry´s main objective was to adopt a defensive stand. He was absolutely sure that war against Great Britain was inevitable. Following this presupposition he proposed recruiting a militia in order to defend Virginia of any military attack.
Even though his words fueled controversy ,there were many assembled delegates that were in favour of Henry´s position. Therefore, they put the resolution to the vote and it passed .
After this significant moment Henry was designated head of a new committee that was responsible for creating the militia.
It is believed that his was one of the most significant contributions to revolution and independence.
