The “decomposers” from animals to insects, to mycelium (fungi or mushrooms), to bacteria, all work to recycle everything in the ecosystem. They are the great recyclers to allow the ecosystem to have energy/nutrient input back into it. In most forest ecosystems mycelium are one of the dominant recyclers. Not only do they recycle old trees/vegetation, they share the resources with many trees/shrubs/plants in a symbiotic relationship, where the trees/shrubs/plants provide the mycelium with sugars, often directly at the root level as they may be directly in contact, and the mycelium provides the broken down nutrients. Of course there are so many different types of mycelium/fungi that some do also attack living trees and aid to their quicker demise.
