Respuesta :

All these are types of metaphors, which is a figurative language that describes an object or action in a way that isn't literally true, but helps explain the idea or make a comparison.

A metaphor says one thing is another thing, it equates these two things in order to compare or make a symbolism.

All of these excerpts create a poetic tone and a colourful mood.

Number 1, 2 and 5 are metaphors.  A metaphor is an implicit comparison between two things.

1.“the depressing clouds of inferiority begin to form in her little mental sky…” A metaphor is used to compare the little girl´s sadness to a sky full of clouds. That means the the little girl is feeling inferior because the park is closed to all black children and not white children. It creates a sad tone  and a depressing mood

2. “There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over…” endurance to racial intolerance is compared to water that will eventually spill over. This means that there comes a time when men can no longer deal with injustice giving them a feeling of despair. It creates an honest  tone and an urgent mood

5.” In those days the Church was not merely a thermometer that recorded…” Church is compared to instrument that can record social temperature. It means it actually had the ability to change what was happening in society. It creates a factual tone  and an optimistic mood

Number 3 is an allusion to Socrates. An allusion aims at creating associations of ideas for the readers. Socrates also disobeyed laws that were not fair. It creates a matter-of-fact tone and thought-provoking mood .

Number 4 is  simile.” Like a boil that can never be cured as long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its pus-flowing ugliness to…” The simile  is introduced by the preposition like and the author compares racial inequality to an infection that needs to burst open to be cured. He is talking about challenging the racial inequalities. He urges white moderates to step up and stop turning a blind eye to racism. It creates eye opening tone and an  eager mood .

Numbers  6 and 7 are personifications. “Let us all hope the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities…” This means that people´s minds are covered in dark clouds, symbolizing evil and we will soon find a way to be rid of it. Evil is personified in the shape of  dark clouds.  It creates both an optimistic tone and mood.
