During the Mississippian period many native Americans groups set up large fields where they primarily grow corn.

The Mississippian period ( AD 1000-1550) marked a new way of life for Native Americans in midwestern and southeastern United States. The change in the circumstances of life happened because communities grew bigger in size and a new way of providing for their needs was needed. Growing corn provided a surplus of storable food and allowed populations to increase. Apart from corn, which became the staple food, the native Americans also grew beans, squash and sunflowers.
