Before Hrothgar gives Beowulf permission to battle Grendel, he must find out the truth about Beowulf`s adventures.
Hrothgar must trust Beowulf before sending him to fight the monster, because lives of his people are in danger as Grendel comes to Heorot and kills people there and nobody can fight him because Grendel cannot be cut by a sword.
Beowulf comes to Hrothgar voluntary and offers his help. He fights Grendel without any swords.
