The Pinckney´s Treaty was also called the Treaty of San Lorenzo. The authorities of the United States and Spain signed it in 1795.
The treaty established that North American citizens could navigate across the Mississippi river through Spanish territory with their total permission.
In the signing of this treaty,Edmund Jennings Randolph played an important role. He had been appointed U.S attorney general by President George Washington by that time. Randolph with the help of Thomas Pinckney conducted the negotiations .
The United States President, George Washington, claimed in his farewell address that United States Nation should not seek for permanent alliances with other nations as these will not result favourable for the country in the long-term. Nevertheless, he suggested limiting alliances and/or free trade with other nations only in neccesary times.
