Martin Luther was perhaps the most important figure in the religious movement known as the Reformation.
Martin Luther was a German priest who came to reject many of the teachings of the Catholic Church. In particular, he disagreed with the Church's use of indulgences and sacerdotism, as well as with its interpretation of the doctrine of salvation. Luther made his views public in a document he entitled Ninety-five Theses in 1517. Luther's teachings became the foundation of Protestantism, and initiated the changes in religious life in Europe known as the Reformation.
