Barriers to industry developing in the south:

Farming was important, not new business due to cotton.

People did not put capital, or money to invest in business, new industry did not develop.

Market for manufactured goods was smaller.

Some southerns did not want industry.

A barrier to industry developing in the South was the use of slaves in cotton production.

The South had cotton production at the centre of the commercial culture. The high demand for it made cotton production more profitable and increased the needed of slaves, which at the time were the used work force for planting, picking up cotton and handling the machines.

The slavery in cotton production affected the South economy by slowing the process of investment in other goods or services as industry, most of the Southerners did not want to put money for growing the industry sector because the use of slaves was very profitable.
