Alliances can lead to competition in the fact that depending upon the country one will try to put forth more armies or supply's and try to outdo the other country or countries that they are aligned with. This can be both good and bad. One country might try to take all the glory for winning the war that was going on. The country's mindset might be 'the more I put forth the more glory I get. I put forth more resorces so therefore I get more honor for this victory.' I mean let's face it, if some country's where more humble than what they are today then they wouldn't be trying to hog the glory.
