One is an ostrich, the other is a mononykus dinosaur. The structural relationship is obvious. Mononykus moved about on two legs, was very nimble, and could run at high speeds, something that would have been useful in the open desert plains where they lived. It had a small skull, and its teeth were small and pointed, suggesting that it ate insects and small animals, such as lizards and mammals.

Birds are to be believed to have evolved from bipedal dinosaurs called theropods around 150m years ago.

Ornithomimids were a distinctive group of theropod dinosaurs who show a good example of convergent evolution with the ratite birds, such as ostriches.

What do ostriches have in common with dinosaurs?

  • Ostriches are overall size and shape are quite similar to that of a handful of dinosaur species, including the notorious velociraptor; even their talons are claw-like.
  • Ostriches are whacky-looking creatures at the best of times, but  that they're very closely related to a species of dinosaur dating back to the late Cretaceous period.
  • The Ornithomimosauria or ornithomimosaurs ("bird-mimic lizards") are theropod dinosaurs which bore a superficial resemblance to the modern-day ostrich.
