Constantine legalized Christianity in the Roman empire, as Christians had previously been persecuted and executed in the Roman Empire due to their violation of the law that stated the emperor must be worshipped as a god. Constantine changed that when he supposedly had a dream that he and his army saw a cross of light in the sky above the sun with the words in hoc signo vinces which was Greek but in Latin means in this sign conquer. The next morning Constantine told his soldiers to paint crosses on their shields. They then went to war as “Christian soldiers.” Afterwards, Constantine issued the edict of Milan, which while it did not require everyone in the empire to convert to Christianity, it encouraged it.
