in September of 1895, Booker t Washington gave a speech at the cotton states and international exposition in Atlanta Georgia. this speech also known as the Atlanta compromise was the first speech ever given by an African American in front of a racially mixed audience in the south. some of the things that Booker t Washington was suggesting that for the opportunity to acquire vocational training and to participate in the economical development of the new south, the Africans would not agitate for social and political equality. he believed that African Americans could gain the esteem of white society and eventually full citizenship. through hard work and hard earned respect, just as the white man would do,is how they would gain these challenges. through Booker t Washington hard work and hard earned respect the African Americans were finally provided the educational opportunities he had been asking for in his Atlanta compromise.
