The Gestalt school of thought was responsible for the introduction of a set of laws regarding the way in which humans tend to perceive objects in an orderly way and organized by patterns. These laws are divided into six categories: similarity, proximity, good form, closure, common fate, and continuation.
The principle of closure, specifically refers to how humans tend to complete figures or patterns that seem to be lacking or missing information. In our mind, we alter the perception of objects that seem incomplete to fit patterns that are familiar to us. The phenomena is believed to be caused by surival instinct, which would allow us to identify a predator that is hidden or camouflaged.
Hope this helps!
