5+2x-5 = 17-5

2x = 12

2x/2 = 12/2

x=6

To earn 17 dollars, you must get the 5 dollars for showing up plus 2 dollars for each errand ran.

subtract 5 from 15 to get 12.  then divide 12by 2 to get 6.  You must run 6 errands
