Trophic level 1 is the starting point for a food chain. Trophic level 1 contain producers such as plants. Plant are called producers because they use energy from the sun to make their own food. Trophic level 2 consists of primary consumers that are hetrotrophs like squirrels, elks or any animals that feeds on plants. Energy enters in food chain at trophic level 2.

1. Primary producers make organic matter using inorganic nutrients and energy, while primary consumers eat primary producers.

Primary producers

2. Which trophic level is the starting point for energy entering the food web? (2 points)

Primary producers

3. On a food web diagram, sea grass is labeled as a primary producer, and a manatee is labeled as a primary consumer. What is the reason for this difference? (2 points)

Primary producers make organic matter using inorganic nutrients and energy, while primary consumers eat primary producers.

4. Loggerhead sea turtles eat a variety of things including vegetation, jellyfish, and crabs. Young loggerheads have many predators, but the large adults are generally safe from all except large sharks and seals. Where would the loggerhead appear on a food web? (2 points)

It is a primary and secondary consumer because it eats plants and animals.

5. Some bacteria are decomposers, which fill an important role in the food web. What would happen to an ecosystem without decomposers? (2 points)

All levels of the food web would be affected because it would be difficult to recover nutrients from dead matter and waste.

6. A Bluefin tuna eats a sardine that has recently been feeding on plankton. The sardine has 1,000 joules worth of energy, but the tuna ultimately gains only about 100 joules. Where does the rest of the energy go? (2 points)

It is used for cell functions or transformed to heat energy.
