There are various ways in which Eliezer and the other inmates cope with the horrors they witnessed, but all of these can be classified into two main strategies.
The first strategy was by trying to become numb to these experiences. This process of dehumanization allowed the prisoners to care less about what happened, and in this way, avoid some suffering. This meant that there was little loyalty or friendship among the prisoners.
The other method is that of faith. Eliezer and other prisoners relied on their faith on God, and his infinite wisdom, in order to endure these horrors. They believed that God had a plan, and that through their faith, they were going to be saved from this situation eventually.
