Jane Addams, best known as the 'mother of social work', was an American activist, sociologist, reformer, and protestor in terms of world peace and women's suffrage. She is the founder of one the most famous settlement houses in America, known as Hull House, in 1889.
With her powerful voice and speech, she helped America focus it's attention on issues that were concerning mothers and women, such as public health, world peace, and children care. She focused on making the connection between government and household even more important, and how these were matters that could be traced back to the roles of women in the private sphere, and therefore, how women needed the vote to be able to voice their opinions.
Her ideas today continue to shape the role of women, and to influence social, political and economic reforms in the United States. Also, her speeches and writings as a peace advocate influenced the later shape of the United Nations actions on gender equity and social actions.
Jane Addams passed away in 1935, but she has become a true permanent symbol of the fight for women. Have a wonderful week! :)
