The environment changed drastically probably due to tectonic plates shifting and either causing this part of land to move to a higher altitude or blocking the water from being in this now deserted place. At some point it seemed to be a river shown in the picture of the rock on the top right corner, as the rock looks a bit corroded it seems that the ocean slowly disappeared.
