The Iran hostage crisis that took place in November 1979 was a standoff that began in the American embassy in Tehran when a group of pro-Ayatollah students seized 66 hostages, mostly diplomats, and citizens due to the general discontent in their country that explode due to the Shah´s trip to New York after being forced to flee to Egypt.
Even though President Carter was not happy about the idea of having the exiled leader in American territory, he agreed to allow him to enter the U.S. for health treatment in October of the same year.
However and as a response regarding this situation, immediately after the hostage, President Carter took several measurements that included stop purchasing Iranian oil, freezing big amounts of money of Iranian assets in the United States, and building a strong boycott campaign against them.
He even started the Operation Eagle Claw, a military rescue mission that finally failed.
