A cat cornered a mouse in a barn and was about to eat it. “Save me!” the mouse cried. “And someday I may save you!” The cat was haughty. “How can a tiny mouse ever save a cat?” she asked. “I may be tiny,” the mouse answered, “but I have 34 brothers and sisters. Together, we will help you someday when you are in grave danger.”

The cat was amused. She decided to let the mouse go. One day, weeks later, a snarling, growling dog cornered the cat in the same barn.

“Help!” cried the cat. “I’m in grave danger!” Suddenly, 35 mice leaped out of a hole in the wall. They began nipping at the dog with all their might.

The dog yelped as he raced away.

“Thank you,” the cat said to the mice. “You really did save me!”

A theme of the selection is

there is power in collective action.

dogs can be scared away by cats

all cats are foolish creatures

there is competition for survival. THIS ONE

Respuesta :

There is power in collective action as the one mouse could do nothing to the cat. But the one cat could do nothing to the dog, but 34 mice could because there is power in collective action.

Answer:

There is power in collective action.

Explanation:

→The only theme that would make sense in the following answers is "there is power in collective action." The theme of this section is this because in the excerpt, the cat had laughed at the mouse, when it had told them that if the cat was in danger the mice would save them. The cat then saved the mouse, which also shows how collective action has more power. Then later, the cat gets rescued by dozens of mice, showing how the cat wasn't able to do anything by itself, and needed the help of the dozens of mice.

→The 2nd and 3rd answer choices can easily be eliminated, since they don't fit the "moral" of the short excerpt.

→The last answer choice can be eliminates since although this may be a true statement of how "there is competition for survival," it isn't a moral/lesson that you can learn, which identifies as a theme.

The correct answer is, "There is power in collective action."
