a company added a new oil tank that holds 350 barrels of oil more than its old oil tank. Together they hold 3650 barrels of oil. How much does each tank hold.

Respuesta :

Answer:

Capacity of old tank =  1650 barrels.

Capacity of new tank =  2000 barrels.

Explanation:

  Let a be the capacity of old tank and b be the capacity of new tank.

 A company added a new oil tank that holds 350 barrels of oil more than its old oil tank.

So we have    b - a  = 350 ----------------------equation 1

Together they hold 3650 barrels of oil

                        a + b = 3650 ----------------------equation 2

equation 1 + equation 2

                       2b = 3650 + 350 = 4000

                          b = 2000 barrels.

Substituting in equation 1

                  2000 - a = 350

                            a = 1650 barrels.

Capacity of old tank =  1650 barrels.

Capacity of new tank =  2000 barrels.
