Edgar Allan Poe belived that a poem should be written looking for the aesthetic aspect and "for a poem's sake" (the only true art) and not attached to any other motive. One reason for this is that he despised the philosophy that enphasizes information and instruction in arts, called Didacticism.  Also, he didn't agree with the concept of a long poem, even suggesting that an epic should be structured in a collection of shorter pieces.
