In "No Gumption", Russell's mom plays the role of a manager to Russell because she believes that Russell has no gumption in him.
The Cambridge English Dictionary defines "gumption" as "the strong will and determination to do something". Thus, Russell's mom harbored the feeling that he has no ambitious spirit and no competitive bone in his body.
Russell's mom is bent on making something of Russell's life. She wants him to be a success in life. She gets him a job as a newspaper salesman but Russell is awful at it. He is unable to sell his fifty copies of the weekly newspaper in a week. She makes him continue with the job for three years, by continuously motivating and encouraging him to put in his best efforts. In the end, Russell leaves the job but then his mom discovers a paragraph written by him and concludes that he could make a great writer. After this, she starts encouraging him to focus on his writing if he wants to make something of himself.
