Romans had a unique and original religious tradition that was used to define themselves as an ethnic group. Their expansion and conquest of other ethnic groups led to a form of syncretism in which Romans adopted, amongst other elements, different religious beliefs. The adoption of ancient Greek religious beliefs (their gods, particularly) became one of the most important factors in Roman religion. Most of the Greek gods and their cult is present (under different names) in Roman religion.
