In general, Europe was walking the path to an almost inevitable war. There was a lot of tension between imperialistic nations and the eagerness, specifically Germany, to engage in military conflict caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and it was just a matter of time for it to escalate. With the Alliance system in place putting Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary on one side, and France, Great Britain and Russia on the other a war between any of these nations would likely mean the others would get involved. That was the situation in Europe during those times, which definitely led to spark up WWI in July 28th 1914.
