Correct answer: C). Autotrophs fix carbon and produce oxygen for heterotrophs, which produce carbon dioxide for autotrophs.
Autotrophs are those organisms, that are known to make their own food in the presence of sunlight. Example- Plants
Heterotrophs are those organisms that use the food that comes from the other organism in the form of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. These organisms that feed on other are called as heterotrophs.
Example: Carnivores, omnivores etc
Autotrophs and heterotrophs benefit one another within an ecosystem because autotrophs fix carbon and produce oxygen for heterotrophs, which produce carbon dioxide for autotrophs.
Further Explanation:
Every single moment an individual is live, needs energy. Even an individual is in resting position requires energy. An individual get energy by having food. An organism is divided into two categories on the basis of their process of attaining food are:
- Heterotrophs
- Autotrophs
Organisms that are autotrophs in nature can make their own food. Mainly plants are referred as autotrophs but there are other examples of autotrophs are also present. Algae, phytoplankton, bacteria and plants, are photosynthetic in nature. They use sunlight to make sugar, which then converts into energy. They make their food by photosynthesis. Photosynthetic organisms are mainly green because they contain a chlorophyll pigment which helps in absorbing light.
Organisms that are heterotrophs are depending on other for their food. They do not make their own food. Heterotrophs also referred as herbivores that mainly eat plants. The number herbivores are less in ecosystem than autotrophs because they get only ten percent of energy from autotrophs. Some examples of heterotrophs are animal and fungi.
The autotrophs are dependent on the heterotrophs for carbon dioxide, which is an essential compound during photosynthesis. Heterotrophs on the other hand are dependent on the autotrophs for food and nutrition which ultimately leads to energy production.
