The Answer is Richmond and Atlanta. Grant planned to march into Richmond while
Sherman conducted a campaign in the West where he would destroy infrastructure
that supplied rebel forces. Grant was
able to hold Lee at Petersburg as Sherman came behind the Confederate forces
that cut rebels from the South and led to their surrender.
