The transatlantic slave trade was the largest mass deportation in history and a defining variable in the world economy of the 18th century. Millions of Africans were wrenched from their homes, deported to the American continent to be sold as slaves. A main cause of the trade was the colonies that European countries were beginning to develop. In America, a new colony of England, there was a need for many laborers for the sugar, tobacco and cotton plantations
At least 10 million Africans were enslaved and transported to Europe and the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries as part of the Atlantic slave trade. This was because there was a strong demand for labor on plantations in the Americas.
