The two variables in an experiment are the independent, which is manipulated by the researcher, and the dependent which is a characteristic or measurement that resulted from the manipulation.
The dependent variable is the one that the scientist focuses his observations on. It is observed to see how that variable respond to the change made to the independent variable.
