Former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson believed that the nation's future depended on its westward expansion. ... By 1840 almost 7 million Americans had migrated westward in hopes of securing land and being prosperous. The belief that settlers were destined to expand to the west is often referred to as Manifest Destiny.

the after effects of the westward expansion werent good. The Westward Expansion generally had a negative effect on the Native Americans. They were forced to live on reservations, and they were forcefully from their native lands. As well as the natives being forced out of their land, the buffalo had a large decrease in population. There was also growing tensions, and there were cases of Natives and Americans fighting, and causing deaths on both sides.
