The first woman to serve on the Supreme Court was Sandra Day O'Connor. She is now retired, but she was appointed in 1981, under Ronald Reagan's government until 2006.

Prior to the Supreme Court she was a judge in Arizona by the Republican party. Considered a federalist and a moderate Republican, O'Connor tended to approach each case narrowly without arguing for sweeping precedents. She most frequently sided with the Court's conservative block, although in the latter years , she was regarded as having the swing opinion in many cases.
