Atomic number of sulfur is 16. The electronic configuration of sulfur (S) can be written as [tex][Ne]3s^{2}3p^{4}[/tex]. So, inorder to reach the stable octet configuration the valence shell tends to accept two electrons to form sulfide, a divalent anion.
This can be represented as,
[tex]S + 2e^{-}-->S^{2-}[/tex]
Therefore, the charge on sulfide ion[tex]S^{2-}[/tex] is -2 as sulfur atom tries to get a stable octet configuration by accepting two electrons giving a negative charge to the ion formed.
The net charge of sulfide ions which is ( S 2-)
is obtained by gaining two electrons to be stable.
Explanation
definition; net charge is the charged particles of an atom
sulfur is in atomic number 16 with 2.8.6 electronic configuration, it gain two electron to form sulfide ion with 2.8.8 electronic configuration thus it has a net charge of 2-
