France was the country that provided the most support to help them during the American Revolution. As far as I know, Japan didn't take part in the American Revolution. Although Prussia (a dissolved German country) did provide support to the Americans, the Germans also fought on the British side as well. And Portugal did help America, despite the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance still being in place. However, the main supporters of America during that time were France, Spain, and the Netherlands
