United States President Harry S. Truman popularized the phrase “The buck stops here.” .The president kept a sign that states the motto in his oval office in the White House. On October 2, 1945, the sign was made in the Federal Reformatory at El Reno, Oklahoma with the request of then US Marshall Fred A. Canfil. It was delivered to the President on the same day.

It meant that the president must accept the eventual responsibility for decisions he has to make and refrain from passing blame or denying authority and control over situations. The saying was derived from the phrase “passing the buck”, relating to the game of poker, which meant passing on obligation to somebody else.
