Prosperity, as it is used in "The marigolds", means success or wealth. But in the context of the Great Depression, and for black people, it would mean not poor, having a job and make ends meet. Prosperity doesn't mean the same for white and for black, the American dream doesn't come true for anyone in this period, but especially for black people.
