The United States took advantage of France's commitment to defend them during the war.

The United States in 1778 finally managed to establish an economic and military alliance with France. Through this agreement, the European country undertook to intervene in favor of the independence of America in case of declaring war with England. The political situation was ideal to obtain the independence of the country.
The first decision they made was to appoint Benjamin Franklin plenipotentiary minister. The American Congress recognizes the merit that Franklin has had in the negotiations that have led to the support, now open, of France. Accordingly, it is determined to replace the American delegation with a single plenipotentiary minister. Choose Franklin for that position in September 1778.
Three months after signing the treaties, an incident takes place between the French and English naval forces near the island of Ouessant. From that moment, the two powers are at declared war. The Americans finally get what they wanted: the war of independence has become a Franco-British war. The treaty of alliance signed in Paris guarantees French intervention, which will be decisive to achieve their plans.
